Get cash in the bank without leaving your house!

If the pandemic taught us anything, it’s that working from home is a feasible option for more jobs than we ever imagined. Whether you can’t face returning to the office, have a health condition, or need something more flexible than the standard nine-to-five, there are now plenty of ways to earn money without stepping out of your front door. Join us as we explore how to make money from home, both on- and off-line.

Refine your money-making ideas

With so many options open to you, it will help to have some idea of your skills, requirements and preferences before diving into finding your next role. Spend some time considering what skills you’ve used in the past and where your strengths lie.

A must-have list is a good idea too - do you need the discipline of set hours, or the flexibility of a job where you can set your own deadlines? Do you want a role with lots of interaction, or do you prefer working solo? Are you confident using technology, or would an offline role suit you better?

Now you have a better idea of what kind of job will suit you, you’re ready to think about the different ways to make money from home.

Make money online from home

If you have the kit and the technical skills, you can earn money online. Many traditional office jobs can now be done from home, so it may be possible to continue your current role - a conversation with your line manager or HR team could open this door. If that’s not an option, these home-working jobs are worth considering:

Selling goods

Got something to sell? From clearing out your old clothes to finding an outlet for a creative hobby, online sales is an easy way to make a bit of extra money. There are plenty of platforms you can use for a ready-made audience (think eBay or Etsy) or you could create your own custom website - just be prepared to spend as much time marketing and driving traffic to the site as you do selling on it!

Selling services

Many jobs that were previously confined to an office can be done just as easily online these days - Administrators and Executive Assistants can work remotely for several clients at a time as a Virtual Assistant, for example. Marketing roles, most notably social media management, can also be carried out from a home office, as can coaching and business consultancy.

Selling expertise

Do you have a particular area of expertise? Maybe friends are always asking your advice on something or you’ve achieved great results with a previous employer. It’s likely that people will pay good money for that! There are several ways to share your knowledge: consider providing tutoring to adults or young people, writing online courses, producing webinars, or writing a blog.

Trading

Got a head for numbers and strategy? With the right knowledge and technology, trading cryptocurrencies, Forex, stocks, commodities, and more can be a lucrative way of earning from home.

Make money from home offline

For those that prefer to be away from the computer, the traditional options still exist. Let’s look at how to make money from home offline.

Caring

Anyone with a nurturing streak can consider monetising this at home. From pet-sitting to babysitting to child-minding to befriending, people will always need a hand caring for those they love. With the right insurance and safeguarding in place, this option could make the most of your natural skills to make money under your own roof.

Creating

Are you the creative type? You don’t have to be Van Gogh to make money from your talent. Home-made crafts, clothes, art, calligraphy, and bakes can be sold locally at craft fairs, school fetes, and farmers’ markets. Not the artistic type? Why not write a book? Self-publishing can bring in decent pocket money if you hit the right notes with your readers.

Sharing

If it’s a passive income you’re after (and let’s face it, we’d all like that!) then monetise what you already have. Maybe you have a spare room or a parking space that you can rent out? Is there a market locally for you to hire out garden tools, kitchen gadgets, or musical instruments? Green-fingered entrepreneurs could even sell excess produce from their yard or community garden!

The international perspective

With traditional employment, jobs are usually limited to your local area. Technology has made the world a smaller place so, while you’re working from home, you could be doing business in every corner of the globe!

You can use this to your advantage by building a global customer base, or alternatively by using your specialist knowledge of Australia to support clients elsewhere. For example, tax, law and education specialists will have insight into Australian regulations and systems that would be a solid investment for companies based elsewhere.

Become a work-from-home entrepreneur!

People are increasingly exploring how to make money from home. From setting up a business from scratch to transitioning an office job to the kitchen table, it has never been so easy to earn money from home. Most of these suggestions aren’t quick fixes and will require time and patience to set up and build a customer base but, for those that crave the flexibility of home-working, it’s possible to make this way of life work.
