If you want the job, make sure the interviewer knows it!

Preparation is the key to a successful interview. In this article, we’re delving into the best way to answer the common interview question “why do you want to work for us?”. We’ll explain how to develop the perfect response and also tell you what to avoid, so that the interviewer can see clearly that you’re right for the job.

Why do hiring managers ask this question?

“Why do you want to work for us?” is a popular question because it helps the interviewer to assess your enthusiasm for the position. If they can see that you’ve done your research and have compelling reasons why you’d be a good match for the company, it reassures them that you’re taking the opportunity seriously. If your values and requirements align, you’re likely to be a good hire.

Other ways this question might be asked

This question could be phrased in several ways:

  • Why would you like to work with us?

  • Why do you want to work here?

  • Why are you interested in this position?

  • Tell us why you want to work for us

How to answer “why do you want to work for us?”

There’s no right or wrong answer to this question, as it will depend very much on your experience and personality, as well as the company culture and role requirements. Obviously, this will differ in every case. That’s not a bad thing though, as it enables you to give an answer that’s truly unique to the situation.

In order to prepare for this question, you’ll first need to carry out some research. Start with the job advert, which will give you some background on the role, and probably the department and the company as well.

Then expand your research by looking at the company website, particularly their values, mission, and About section. They may have recent press releases available too, so that you’re completely up-to-date when you walk into that interview room. Check out their social media accounts as well, so you can understand their products, focus, and customers.

As you do your research, make notes on anything that will help you to answer the “why do you want to work for us?” question. Maybe you love using one of their products, they support a cause close to your heart, or the key responsibilities play to your strengths. List as many reasons as you can that the job is a good match for you.

In the interview, refer to the points you noted; it’s fine if you want to take your notes in with you, it’s not an exam! Your objective is to show that you’ve considered the different aspects of the role - from the company to the responsibilities - and can meet their expectations at every turn. Show your interest and give specific examples wherever possible.

“Why do you want to work for us?” example answer

A confident “why do you want to work for us?” answer will show the interviewer exactly why they should consider you for the role. Here’s an example answer to inspire you:

When I read the job advert, I immediately knew that this was a role I wanted to apply for. I use your products myself at home, to feed my three cats, and your commitment to ensuring that pets are healthy and well-cared-for really resonates with me. My cats are part of the family so I’m fully on board with your mission statement and I love that you support animal welfare charities as part of your corporate social responsibility agenda.

As you can see from my CV, I have the experience needed to do the job to a high standard, and that appeals too. I’m not the sort of person to plod along day to day, I really want to be able to contribute. I can see an opportunity to do this within your business, as I understand that you’re growing quickly. In particular, my background in launching new products will be useful as you grow the cat food range - the last launch I worked on achieved its profit targets three months ahead of schedule. I’m driven by getting great results like that and I think this role will give me the opportunity.

As you can see, this “why do you want to work for us?” answer gives compelling reasons that the applicant wants the job, but also explains how they can contribute to the company.

What not to say when asked “why do you want to work for us?”

Let’s look at the other side of the coin now - what should you not say when asked “why do you want to work for us?”

  1. Money, money, money: Everyone’s there for the salary, but sadly the need to put a meal on the table isn’t a compelling reason for a company to offer you the job. The interviewer wants to know you’re excited about the role and can have an impact and honestly.. they don’t care if you’re living on baked beans.

  2. Desperation: Don’t sound desperate for the job! If enthusiasm spills over into desperation, it’s not a good look - the interviewer will assume you’ll march straight out the door as soon as a better proposition arises. Recruiting is expensive - they’re looking for someone who will stay the course.

  3. Career progression: This one’s tricky, because it’s great to show some ambition in the interview. You need to get that balance right though - don’t make it sound like you’re looking at the role as a short-term step to bigger things, make it sound like this role is the bigger thing that you’re leaving your current job for.

You’re a perfect match!

If you know you’re perfect for the job, make sure the interviewer knows it too. Research and enthusiasm are your keys to success when answering “Why do you want to work for us?".
